Controller has nothing to do with distance.... As I commented above I live in a very hilly area and could not make some of the roads in our rural HOA with the stock controller... Needed strength with strength also came speed....

Yes the larger controller can pass more amperage to the motor and as long as the motor can handle the increased amps that makes it stronger... I went with steps of new batteries better but still not climbing some hills. Bigger cables tiny bit better but still stalling out on the hills, hot motor from Plum Quick picked up some speed and torque but still not climbing a few roads here. Added the 500 amp controller and I can now make any hill in our 1,000 + acre HOA....

No problem.... Keep in mind that these controllers are electronic and smart enough due to their programming to limit the amps being passed to the motor so even a big old hulking motor wound for torque will be limited by the amps the controller is programmed to allow.... A bottle neck if you will...
