Steering loose again

On my 96 txt I replaced my entire steering box with a remanufactured unit and only after three weeks there is slop in the steering again. It has been the same for boxes like this were I have rebuilt them versus replacing the entire unit. Is this due to cheap after market overseas parts? Do I need to drop a huge chunk of money for a box directly from ezgo or am I going to get the same quality from them and I am just going to have live with slop of this type of design?

I can't say for the rack and the pinion quality in steering components, but I purchased some bearings for my mower deck that were Chinese, and they disintegrated in two weeks! The originals lasted 3 yrs! The machine work in China sucks as well as the quality of the material. A bunch of our scrap metal goes to China and it would be fine if it was sorted properly to maintain the specific alloy. I think they just dump it all in a smelter and use whatever mix comes out in items that need specific alloy content. This is just a guess on my part, but I have never seen bearings that you can cut with a hacksaw until now!

You need to get a new OEM steering unit if rebuilding and replacement parts didn't fix the issue. Import copies are not OEM quality. Steering slop on these units come from years of no grease and poor maintenance. I just took in a 1994 trade last month that was very well maintained and the steering was a tight as the day it was new...

you might try to find a good used one and go thru it. pretty sure they make rebuild kits also.

I bought one of these, but it doesn't include all of the bushings. One or more is difficult to access, and they don't sell them separately, so I ended up replacing the entire housing.

WOOHOO It's fixed..... Well before I bit the bullet and bought different parts, I thought I would have one more look. As no other views were showing anything loose other than slop in the rack, I jacked the cart up, put two cinder blocks under the front wheels so there was tension on the steering and had my wife move the steering wheel back and fourth ever so much till there was tension, i.e. tension to tension. Being underneath I was able to see something I could not see before. The jam nut where the rack ball end attaches to the big swing arm was ever so slightly loose, but I could not seeing it moving from either side, pulled, the cotter pin and really went to town on tightening it down, put the cotter pin back in and took it for a drive. Good as new, very tight new steering like I should have.... whew..
