Default question on wiring a soc led meter

Hello, I believe this question has been asked a thousand times but I'm still having an issue after reading a ton of related posts. 36v cart, with four posts on my meter. Pos, neg, then R and R. I am able to get it working ok with pos connected to pos on first battery, and neg to neg on last battery but cannot get it on switched power so it's not on all the time, Ive tried everywhere with positive with no luck. Kind of wondering if I bought a pos without enough posts to get switched power? Any suggestions?

Also, the paperwork says the R, R posts typically are not used.

The old Curtis led bar graph meters had 4 posts
Typically they used 2 +. One constant and the second was switched.

I'm not very good with electrical things. To make it switched I've read to connect off the positive side of the switch. What does that mean exactly. At the solenoid? That's where the key connectors go?
