Newbie introduction with a ? on batteries
Hi Everyone I'm the new guy here. I just picked up a 2001 E-Z-GO 36 volt cart. I bought it off a friend of a friend. The batteries are dead and need to be replaced. I plan on buying Trojan batteries. But with everything else the more you read the more you start second guessing your decision. For the most part everything I read about Trojan they seem to rank up there at the top. But I have found a few negative post from people saying Trojan quality is on a down hill slope. I know this subject has been beat to death. I just want to be certain before I drop $800.00 on new batteries.
Thanks, Matt |

Re: Newbie introduction with a ? on batteries
Hi Matt, Trogan's are good batteries, as are Crown's, and a few others.
oh and btw.....CONGRATS on the ride, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands, girlfirends and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy. oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here. Welcome!! |

Re: Newbie introduction with a ? on batteries
In general terms, there is more differences between the various grades of batteries within the same brand than there is between the same grade batteries in the various brands.
Buy the highest Amp-Hour battery (20 hour AH rating) you can afford in the brand that sells for the best price in your specific locality. Personally, I believe Crown, Deka, Exide, Trojan and US Battery are near equals and more or less tie for the top spot on the list. Here is a non-all-inclusive list showing many of the 6V deep cycle batteries used in golf carts. It is sorted in descending order by AH and then by brand name. If the battery you are considering isn't on the list, find one on the list with the same, or similar, AH rating and that is where it stacks up compared to the others. |

Re: Newbie introduction with a ? on batteries
Thanks everyone for the welcome. Thanks JohnnieB for the information. A friend of a friend that does Hilo repair was able to get me his discount on batteries. I ended up going with the US Battery 2200's.

Re: Newbie introduction with a ? on batteries
Higher than standard AH.
Be sure to charge them prior to first use and then break them in properly. (New batteries only have about 75% of rated storage capacity until they are broken in.) Here is how: http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Batter...n_Methods.html Also, what charger are you using? US Batteries need to reach a little higher On-Charge voltage than other brands. Attached is their charging instructions. (Yell if you have trouble deciphering them. ) |

Re: Newbie introduction with a ? on batteries
You need to check what voltage the PW charger shuts off at.
If you have a DVM with a Min/Max function, it will do the work for you, but if you don't: Place batteries on charge in the evening and the next morning, uplug the charger, wait a minute or so, and plug back in. This charge cycle should only last a few minutes and by keeping an eye on the DVM, you ought to be able to determine the max On-Charge voltage reached. It doesn't reach about 46V, you will be undercharging your new batteries. Let me know what it reaches. |
