If I put both cables on one side of the solenoid post affectively jumping them and the solenoid clicks but the cart still doesn't move, would that still be cause for a bad solenoid?

If the solenoid is working, that should be the same electrically as you putting the 2 cables together. That would mean whatever fireworks you saw outside are going on inside the controller. This leads me to think the controller is bad. Unless you have a pedal/throttle problem that would cause the fireworks you describe from activating the cart suddenly. Did the wheels spin?

Assuming you have everything wired correctly, I think the controller is bad.

I hope others will chime in on my thoughts.
I attempted this same exact method by jumping the two cables to the first large solenoid terminal. When reconnecting the negative end of the battery pack I too had a single large spark (welding size). The cart was trying to move but would not go further than an inch. Is there a way to test the controller?

To add context - my cart was working consistently until one day while driving, the cart stopped accelerating and I had to push the cart home. The cart has not worked since then.

Test your voltage across the B- terminal and M- on your controller, there should be a change in voltage when the pedal is pressed. If there is not a large difference your potententiometer may be bad. Do you have a potbox or vglide?

Take the Yellow wire off Pin #3 on your controller and with the cart jacked up, in Forward, and key On, check the voltage from pedal up to pedal down and it should go from 0vdc to 5vdc gradually changing. (Red probe on Yellow wire and Black probe on B-).

I had similar symptoms has you and basically the controller was not sensing that the pedal was being pressed.
