You don't need a hydraulic drum puller. Leave that kind of puller to the technician. It's usually used if you have to pull the entire axle and you take the axle to a bench to work on it. Here is a photo of a drum that has been removed. It uses the same "pin" as yours. The photo is a view from the _inside_ of the drum. See how that "groove" runs all the way through the drum? That's why the drum is able to slide right over that pin when you pull the drum off. Does this make sense to you? |

Re: 2006 CC Precedent Brakes Locking/Dragging
Absolutely. You don't need a hyd puller, it just makes it easier. After a bit more research, I think we can assume we are dealing with a parallel shaft here. In this case, once we have it moving it will come right off. You will probably have to use the puller to wind it all the way off. Once these are rusted on it takes a bit of effort to remove. On reassembly I usually put antiseize paste on first to prevent to happening again. A bit of heat and some grunt and you will succeed. The only thing concerning me is identifying the parts for rebuild. I still cannot find a drum exactly like yours and until that drum is off we can't identify the inner parts. We know the retaining pins will need replacing, almost certainly the brake linings and the drum is likely scored. Maybe if only lightly, it can be skimmed on a lathe to still be within spec, so we just need to get it off. One more suggestion would be to see if you can rent or buy a slide Hammer hub puller. It uses impact to help pull the drum/hub rather than torsion and may work better. Just be aware, the only thing holding the shaft in the axle is likely to be a large circlip holding against the bearing, so don't overdo it or the circlip and or bearing will be damaged. Hopefully now, the pb blaster has worked it's way in and started loosening the rust to release things.

Yeah nothing like following something for 10 pages and not finding the outcome.

I agree. Hopefully, we'll hear something after the mechanic arrives.

Re: 2006 CC Precedent Brakes Locking/Dragging
Well. . . The dealer that sold me the cart is . . . no help. That’s another issue.
The group helped me determine this is a keyed (parallel) axle with the lug bolts likely integrated into the drum. I ordered and just received from England this drum puller. I’ll be putting it to work in two days with hopefully success. Thanks for your patience. |

Re: 2006 CC Precedent Brakes Locking/Dragging
Kind of side issues to this thread: 1) The original post mentioned the dealer working on the rear end. Is it possible they just swapped out some other rear axle they just happened to have around? The last one I came across with a keyed axle shaft to hub was a late 70's EZGO. 2) I've worked on several ACG Hummers and California Roadsters, all have been based on modified Club Car DS chassis, not Precedents. I know that doesn't matter to this situation, but just curious. What do your pedals look like?
