Default G21 starter generator.

So been getting some soft starts ie need to advance clutch to get it to start. And a low battery on a brand new 12volt. So decided let's pull the starter/generator and check it out. Wow worn out brushes new ones on order but the buildup of soot and dirt is amazing. My just opt for a new start/gen. But until then what should I clean the existing start/gen with. I will sand the copper and replace brushes. Clean bearing and air blow but is there anything else to clean it out. Also. Apparently the brush covers are discontinued any body have a lead or aftermarket part number for them ?? Found a guy on Amazon for 20$ per cover I can but the entire unit for that$$!$

I have a 96 G16 and just pulled sg and changed brushes that are destroyed. It's not that hard, and I ended up completely disassembling the sg and cleaning up. For the dust I mainly used air (be sure to wear a respirator and goggles is some nasty stuff ). Just used clean tags to wipe down. I thought about a new one at first but glad I saved money doing it.

Thanks Bubba, that's what I ended up doing. The brushes were not terrible but i replaced. I cleaned it all out and painted the frame. What i did find was a broken deutsch connector that I think is the sensor to flip the field? So i replaced that with new and I will be replacing all the cables and new lugs. Just a quick reinstall with the original cables seems to be doing what it needs to do. Battery charges up when 1/2 throttle. So things look promising

Good to hear. Mine were nibs when I changed them lol. Wish I had an answer about the covers. Did you try calling a dealer and asking for a lead?

Well rode around this weekend a bit and it did "stick" once. I.E. I hit the throttle i hear the solenoid click but no go lift foot and hit again and vroom down the road> So not sure where to go next. But I still have to replace the cables and lug ends ( they look ruff), so once i do that we will see.
