yamaha g16 cutting out at full throttle

Hey guys i just pulled this 96 yamaha g16 out of the weeds (so to speak) New battery, put new fuel in it, checked all hoses, made sure the fuel mixture screw is 1 1/2 turns out. It turned right over and started running. I went to drive it around the block but less then half way it died, so i let of the gas hit it again and it wants to go but doesnt. it starts to backfire. After getting it home i can see after being wide ope for a little bit it acts up and i can see it backfire through the carb at times. Not even sure where to look right now? Almost makes me think it runs out of fuel? Any help would be great thanks guys

Remove the carb and disassemble--bowl, float, jets, idle screw--soak and clean. Especially if its been sitting for a long time...

Clean the carb, pull the valve cover and check the valves. Could have sticking valves since its been sitting "in the weeds" as you say, which would cause fuel in the intake to ignite and backfire into the carb.
