Default yamaha g2 running very rich and losing power

plug is black with soot and sputters at full throttle. Ran great before i fixed airl leaks. I replced the carb spacer with an oem unit (old one cracked). I used oem gaskets as well. I also repleced air box gasket and filter. There are absolutely no obstructions in air box. I have a brand new carb on there as well. That was repleced a year ago with the set screw turned 1 and half times. I also rebuilt the fuel pump. The spark plug is a ngk b5ep. The cart runs good if you disconnect the air box intake hose obviously. I dont know where to turn next guys. One of those weird issues. here is some pictures. the first one is of the plug becuase it is so **** rich. The second one is a pic of the new carb. I would like for someone to tell me what that spring loaded screw is for on the fuel bowl. thanks

It's getting too much gas, turn the screw in 1/4 turn at a time and see if it helps.

That top screw? The one on the bowl is just a drain I found out. I unscrewed it a little and gas started draining out of bowl. Thanks buddy

When you disconnect the air box and it runs better, you have an air box problem. The 4 rubber straps, air box lid (sometimes they get warped) an OEM air filter (aftermarket air filters can be 1/16 or more taller causing a problem) absulutly critical they are sealed correctly. Is the new carb OEM or aftermarket? I haven't seen the pilot jet stick out so far on a stock Mikuni. I would suggest a NGKBPR2ES spark plug, B5EP is not even close to the correct plug. I use the hotter plugs in all 4 cycle Yamaha's since 1985 and have had excellant results. Hope that helped allittle.

I disconnected air silencer and it runs great. I realize it shouldn't be this way. The carb must be aftermarket, I bought it at buggies unlimited. . I should start with that plug you recommended

well i wasnt able to get the plug you suggested but i will order one. however, i was able to get a champion rn5 which is one hotter than the recommended rn8 i asssume. I put that in and put the silencer back on. She ran perfect on the top end and no power loss. Looks like you are the man! that suggestion worked. Im going to go to harbor freight tomorrow night and get an inline spark tester and test the ignition anyway to be sure everything is ok as well.

The BPR2ES is the stock plug for newer yamaha and my dealer recommended I use it in G2/9 carts. It works the best I found and is much more resistant to fouling from mixture problems.

The carb may be jetted richer for a aftermarket filter, and also there are different carbs for different years you may not have the same one. Anyway, I have run mine without that air silencer for many years and jetted it richer. It works great. My plug is always dark but they run cooler that way and make more power. It never smelled until it got tired and finally now it is burning a little oil. My clone is nearly ready to go in.

Tested the ignition with an inline and everything is good. I just went ahead and ordered the Ngk plug you guys recommended for the added security. Thanks again.
