If you're worried about the reliability of the clones, you can always have a genuine Honda installed. Or you can go with a V-Twin Briggs, but that's getting back near the cost of a rebuilt Robin by the time you buy the V-Twin and the installation costs. However the Twin Briggs would give you tons more power.

Have you ever taken a motor apart??, if so take it apart and check out all the parts to see what is good or bad,, if you don't think you can do it, take it to the guy you said will rebuild it, and let him tell you what you need

got into the motor yesterday. build up doesn't seem excessive on the shaft. Put a wire brush on it and removed most. I think i am going to rebuild it. I appreciate the comments.

Use muriatic acid on the crank to remove aluminum. Yellow dishwashing gloves and a green scotchbrite pad. If black residue is still coming off, that's aluminum...keep scrubbing.

maybe a mistake - but cleaned up the crankshaft, installed new rod/rings. engine will be put back together in the next couple days by high school shop and see how it goes. crossing my fingers.

Kudos for helping support the kids! !!!
Great experience for them and a less expensive alternative for you, hopefully.
Keep us posted on how things progress please.
