Unhappy Ezgo high range issues

I have an older ezgo, with the 244cc robin. When sliding into high range on the street, it falls flet on its face, makes a crazy noise from the clutch, and even goes slower than the low speed clutch range. Then, it will pick back up a few seconds later, climb for a second, and fall flat on its face again. I know it has a governor, but why would it slow down sooooo far, and make all that noise/.? Thanks for any help! Also trying to find a new carb boot, mine sheared off during the suspension upgrade last week...

It could be that the spring in the driven clutch is worn and weak. This allows the clutch to open too wide and the belt to fall into the center where it hits the rivets and slows you down. You could jack up the rear axle and observe the operation of the clutches as you gently rev the engine.

It could also be the Govenor, some of them are really goofy-acting.Also check the bushing on the Driven-Clutch,They wear and the sheave will cock to one side, then slam back.Hope this helps.

Hey Dave Box, I think you are correct. I observed the driven clutch opening all the way up, and the belt dragging those rivets. So, not having the correct spring on hand, I used a steel cable (shielded) cut to the perfect length to place into the spring sheath for added tension. Now the spring is under such tension, that I'm having trouble putting it back on. I'm about to take the muffler off so I have better access to push it on. Any suggestions on getting those clips back on the shaft by myself?

You are welcome. Here is a video regarding the clutch, much of it does not apply but it does show the home made compressor tool he used (of course he removed the clutch). By increasing the tension of the spring you have in effect "clocked" it so it will be interesting to see the change in performance.
