Well I have a new problem

when I press the gas pedal there is knocking coming from engine. The engine will start and cart will drive but this concerns me as it is loud. I removed belts and turn engine by hand I can hear it in a certain spot. I removed spark plugs and piston's are moving and seem to have good compression. If I leave the spark plug out on drivers side the knocking goes away.

is this a problem with piston rod or cam or bearing?

will I have to remove engine from cart?

I would pull it apart and have a look. Knocking usually leads to something bad.

I have been poking around and my drive clutch from the crank shaft is noisy rattling sound. I pulled it ...opened it up and the shivs or weights are loose. There are 3 inside clutch and one was so loose the lock nut was hanging on by a thread. Is there a torque spec on these also a lot if rust is it safe too oil?

How'd you come out on ur knocking problem? My 85 has a knocking/clucking noise coming from the drive clutch also. This is only when the engine is just idling and the drive clutch is disengaged. I was thinking it might be the same problem as yours. Please let me know. Thanks

well the real knocking was a piston rod. The 2 bolts on the keeper came loose. So the engine knock was a piston rod. So I am doing some polishing and ordering parts. But I will re visit my drive clutch when I get the engine finished but I plan to clean it up.

so the update

I put new piston's ring and connecting rods in. The knocking was cause by piston connecting rod keeper coming loose.

I got her all back together and motor runs great.
