Default FE290 Engines

I have a couple club cars with the FE290D-AS17 engines in them and want to replace the engines. Can I put any FE290 engine in (as long as I get the proper direction) or does the spec number (AS17) make a difference. Thanks for your help.

Are you asking about a off the shelf Kawasaki fe290 vs club car 290? I have fe290's at work on some equipment. I've been meaning to compare it to my cc fe290.

I'd have to guess the as17 designation is at least for the tapered crank. The fe290's at work have non tapered shafts so that's at least one prohibitive difference.

At the course i work at we have several old carts that we are looking to repair and use for our maintenance staff. The engines in them are just what came with the club cars when they were originally purchased.
