30 mph txt
Well I need to get a new controller. So I'll start with what I have on it. Ezgo txt 2001 1/2
4 gauge wires, alltrax dead controller, ezgo high speed motor, 14" rims with overall 20" wheel size. HDF&R switch. Also hydraulic 4 wheel disc breaks. It stops on a dime. Current setup does 24 mph on the flats. I have no idea what the gears are or how to find out without dropping the pan. So I want 30 mph. What controller , motor setup should I get. The area is mainly flat with a few moderate hills. All street driving only. Thanks |

Is it still on 36 volts, Steve? If so, going to 48 volts and corresponding controller would be the ticket to get it over 30. I'd suggest going to 2 ga cables and verifying what gear ratio is in the rear end as well.

42 volts. I am thinking 48 volts now that I'm doing the changes. If I move the controller I'll have room for 1 more battery. And 2 gauge is the plan as well. Wouldn't mind 30 uphill.

6 more volts would definitely help both torque and speed vs what you have now. Assuming that the cart has the stock 12:44/1 rear gear, going to 8:1 would help the speed but will likely hurt the torque. Bigger controller will gain back torque as long as you have enough battery power.

If you don't mind me asking, what killed the controller? I'm doing a 48v upgrade, and Im researching it. It seems like allot of people kill their controllers. Is that common? They are too expensive to be disposable.

Just having fun is what kills my stuff. This time my wife drove it to target, came home, all is well till it I jump in and it's dead. It's been around 118 degrees for a week or two now. The heat seams to kill everything. Electronics die without cause. And for the motor well if I cook 1 I'll just get a bigger and better 1 next time. But I try not to over wind it going down hill.

The motor is going to draw more amps with the higher gear so as with any upgrade one should monitor motor temp but it can certainly be done. I use my PDS cart to tow the dragster and it has 6:1 gears and upgraded D&D motor and it runs over 40.

Without having any torque vs RPM data for your motor, I cannot even guess what the actual speeds would be. Ironically, Terry and I are running the same motor (D&D ES-76-51), but in two very different carts. I run 17" tires and 12.44:1 gears at 42V and get 28 MPH (6,900 RPM) I'm not sure what his tire height is, but his tow cart isn't lifted so they are less than 20" and he is running 6:1 gears at 48V and gets 40+ MPH. (Probably at about half the RPM my motor spins at top speed) His cart will run circles around mine on the top end, yet has enough low end torque to tow his dragster, but if you tied our cart's rear bumpers together and floored both, my cart would pull his backwards or wear out the tires trying to. The reason is because the ES-76-51 has roughly the same RPM for the applied voltage as a stock PDS motor, but about 30% more torque. Hi-Speed motors and Hi-Speed gears (and/or tall tires) don't play well together. |
