Smallblock picture 3 shows the gap between the snap ring and sheave. It seems to be stopping in the same place each time. If I pull it even lightly it slides the rest of the way out though.

Upon putting the clutch back together I noticed when I tightened the clutch bolt it moved the sheave back into the belt again. Am I missing a snap ring or spacer here?

The spring has been cut. Make shure the fixed sheave (were the sliding sheave rides doesnt have a "ridge" the can hinder it from opening all the way. I'm pretty shure I have a new spring. PM me your address again.

Still concerned whether I'm missing a spacer or not. I shimmed the spring with a 1/4" spacer and it still closes in on the belt when I tightened the bolt. The shim just made the engagement rpm higher and seemed to take away some top speed.

No, inward of the snap ring is just the "cam washer".

Hmmm....you're definitely right about the cut spring. I can see the saw marks now that I'm looking at it closely. Wonder why someone would cut the spring like that. Doesn't make sense to me.

Not that this has anything to do with the jumping problem but I also noticed I'm missing a plastic washer between the weights in the cover. Will that be a problem in the future as well?

Ok so I've finally gotten the primary clutch fixed and dialed in perfectly. No more moving forward with the starter turning and no more jerking on take off. The cart shifts like new now. What I had to do to fix it was make 2 spacers. I made a .125" thick spacer that fits into the spring cup to control the engagement RPM and increase spring force (my spring was cut by a previous owner). That fixed the problem with jerking on take-off. Then I made a spacer for the cover assembly because if you look closely at the picture you will notice that the end of the splines on the shaft are either worn off or ground away for some reason. I made the spacer .125" thick to compensate the width of the worn groove so that when I tighten the clutch cover it rests against the spacer now instead of going in further than it should and causing the cover to compress the moveable sheave inward. I now have a .030"-.050" gap between the belt and sheaves. That fixed the moving forward with the starter problem. I can't thank you all enough for your help with this. My kids are really excited to have the golf cart back and running like new again.
