Default Yamaha G2 Exhaust Heat Shield

We recently bought a 1988 Yamaha G2 as our first cart. Its been running great but the muffler seems to heat up the rear shroud pretty bad. You can feel the heat on our lower back often. We compared it to a friends g2 and noticed his muffler has a heat shield that ours does not. Is our cart supposed to have a shield like his? If so where can we buy one?

I think yours must not be heat sheild equiped as the exhaust header does not have the two bolt hole spots in it, might have to go custom $$$$$or get a whole new muffler

some had it, some did not (as you have found). im not sure what the "change date" was. i think the issue is more "how much oil & crap is burning inside the muffler". when they get older/worn out, more oil ends up in the muffler, after long rides it gets so hot that crud will burn in the muffler (and gets hot & also makes funny "crinkley" sounds after long rides). all the G2-G9 had a built-in heater/seat warmer due to muffler location. my seat is plenty warm after a long desert ride.

You can add the 1995 G14 to that list also.

I was thinking of adding a fan or more insulation as it felt hot for me as well
