Default Yamaha G1 takes a long time to fire

My mate has a G1 that when you put foot on accelerator can take a couple of minutes before it takes off, once it is warmed up this problem disappears, although this doesn't happen when starting in reverse, any suggestions?

Does it crank the motor over for those few minutes before it takes off?

Mine did the same thing when I bought it. Try cleaning the contacts on the starter/gen and also on the solenoids. My connections were corroded from years of no maintenance. Cleaned them up and haven't had the problem since. Hope that's all it is on yours cause it's a quick fix. It could be something else but I would start with cleaning contact points and see if that fixes it.
