Remove your air cleaner and check your butterfly in the carb. It's probably stuck open.

Do you think it has anything to do with the throttle mechanism?

Yes it could be. You'll want to follow your linkage and make sure everything is working properly. It sounds like the butterfly hinge is either stuck in the full open position, or the butterfly has become disconnected from the hinge and is no longer regulating your rpms in reference to the pedal position.
