Default What is this hole for??? HELP!

Feeling a bit pissed off at myself right now. So forgive my attitude. I just changed a main seal for apparently no reason. I had a bad oil leak that seemed to be spraying out from behind the clutch. After changing the clutch. And starting it back up, the oil leak was back. However, since it had been setting for some time, (too many other problems around here to worry about this cart) the oil was drained off everything and I was able to see the oil was not really coming from behind the clutch. It was coming from the back side of the engine near the clutch. apparently, a plug or something is missing. An oil dip stick for another application? I have no idea. but I have a big wide open hole that splashes oil all over the place. What is that hole for and does anyone know the size so I can plug it. not easy at all to see or get to.

I think he means the open, non-threaded hole above the belt in the photo, not the little connector plug thingy below it (which does look like an oil sender of some kind). My guess is that it would be a something like a freeze plug hole. I can check on my in-law's cart later today and see what that hole in their motor is plugged with.

Only half-decent image I could find online, but still can't ID what the hole is plugged with.

Early FE 290s did have a plastic plug there. Newer engines don't have that spot opened all the way through. The hole is there in the casting, but bottoms out to a well - not drilled all the way through. I'm sure it's a hold over from some other application of the motor. I don't know the size off the top of my head, but if you can wait till Monday I've got 4 or 5 engines out of carts in the shop & can get a measurement for you. Yes, that one below the belt in the picture is the oil level sensor (NOT oil pressure) - it's responsible for the red light on the dash.

I have seen them with a rubber plug and them leak so I take thread tape and wrap it around it and push it back in

measure the hole and put a cup style freeze plug in there or one of the rubber plugs that has a nut in the center, when you tighten the nut the plug expands
