Worn fe290
I have a 93 gas club car gas engine that is pretty weak, blows a lot of smoke and leaks quite a bit of oil. It still runs good but wondering if I should rebuild it or buy a stock rebuilt engine. Thought someone might have some input.

I have had 2 motors rebuilt by j and m golf carts in augusta, GA. they do a timely and good job. Told me that I would be charged if I needed parts like connecting rods that snapped or other things, but they have replaced a rod on one motor and a crank on another for no charge. its about $600 plus shipping (25$ at local john deere dealership). I doubt youre buying a motor for less tahn that but I could be wrong |

Re: Worn fe290
Most rebuilders take yours and rebuild it. Or they require a useable core engine sent back. Useable meaning, Its not blown up with a hole in the side where the rod tried to escape.
I’ve used one rebuilder service for two engines now in the last couple years. I sent it in, they rebuilt them and sent them back. I forget the name off the top of my head but they’re somewhere in GA. I pretty much just dropped them off with my local cart guy and he boxed them up and shipped them where they needed to go. First one was an FE350 that needed some internal parts and that one cost a bit more. The other was a 290 that was smoking a little, but still losing around 1/3qt of oil for every tank of gas. I checked the simple stuff but just didn’t have the time myself to tear it down to rebuild. That one was around $900 including freight and taxes. Did have a minor issue with the 290 after the rebuild. Had to pull it out of the cart again and send it back, but they covered the freight both ways and did the repair for no charge, so I’m pretty sure I’ll use them again. |

Re: Worn fe290
J&M have them listed for rebuild on their site, I looked at them a while back. $550 with exchange, you have to send in yours first !! for FE290 or FE350
also a place or two on ebay that does exchanges, $750 or so for a FE290 you have to ship in a rebuild able core or charge you for it, plus charge you for broken parts, including studs :o |
