Default Re: Help Can't get front clutch off

LURCH - The spider unscrews from the clutch in a CCW direction and is usually very tight due to the fact that it is assembled with loctite. You can heat the threaded area with a propane torch to help soften the loctite. The factory makes a special holder tool for the clutch as it is difficult to hold while unscrewing the spider. They also have a special spider tool.

I recently replaced the rollers in my 97 G16 and the spider was really, really tight !! Heating was the key to getting it off. I made my own clutch holder from a 2ft x 2ft x 2 in. thick piece of hardwood. This was actually a "spider holder" and I unscrewed the clutch from the spider. The clutch has a really big & meaty aluminum boss on the back side which allowed me to use a big pipe wrench to grab onto. I put 3 equally spaced alloy bolts into the hardwood to act as the spider holder. It worked fine for me !

I can give you more information on the holder if you want. Hope this helps. - RAY

Glad to hear the good news. I was worried you were going to try the puller or press. I really like members asking questions before damageing parts, makes the building more fun and alot less expensive.

I learned along time ago to ask first and save yourself alot of money.

I just ordered two sets of rollers tonight off of e-bay, they were on sale for 55.75 a set from what I've found that was a good deal. I bought a starter, billitt steering wheel, set of belts, windshield and a switch local and got some pretty good deal's. I just have alot of work ahead of me trying to get both carts going.
I still need a set of F/R cables for a limo, they don't list them on e-bay I'll just have to call about them. Oh and a fuel pump. I'll get some pics up soon.

You probably got the rollers from the same guy I did on E-Bay. They seemed to be good quality & working ok for me !! Good luck with the repairs and let us know the results. RAY

I got them back together today but have not got to try them yet. Do these have to be torqued or just tightened up tight.
