Default Re: Motor pings under load

Well I tripled the recommended octane dose and it seemed to make a difference the more we drove it. We never pulled a trailer this weekend, but it went up the hills with less ping. I'm going to drain the gas I got in it this weekend and put Super Unleaded in it and check it out. Thanks for all the pointers. If this does not work I will be checking out the other recommendations.

If yours is really pinging, then its has a lot of carbon build-up on the piston/head. Does it not get run at moderate high speed? If it just gets lugged around, then it needs to get out and run.

Carbon build up makes hot spots in the cylinder, when a fresh charge of fuel comes in and starts to be compressed, the fuel charge starts to pre ignite from the hot carbon in the cylinder. That is what pinging is.

Mine used to smell of that cheap mexican gas, for about 2 months after I got it. Smelled like that for a long time, finely went away after a lot of extended high speed driving.

That octane stuff is just a waste of money. And the super gas isn't going to do a thing for you ether. Compression ratio, and timing advance, is what dictates what octane is needed. Our little 9 horsers, are well within the parameters of regular (fresh) gasoline.

Get out there and let er breath!!

Mine just recently started doing this (sounding louder then normal), but I'm not sure if I should call it a pinging noise or not? It almost sounds like a rod knock kinda. Its loudest when you first take off and will knock when you get into the gas pedal. I looked it over pretty good to make sure there were no loose clutch parts or exhaust leaks. checked the oil and it looks good. This cart gets rode alot, and for extended periods (upto a few hours sometimes). The grandkids ride this all over the yard (6 acre's) at various speeds. It seems to run okay and I don't feel any power loss. I did recently by-pass the governor. (hope to god the kids didn't fry the motor).
