1983 won't stop running?

I have had my 1983 gas ezgo for about a month or so and just yesterday the thing keeps idling. I have taken the key out, unhooked the ignition wires, but as soon as i try to put the cable back on the battery the thing starts running again. The only time it doesn't is when i am in between forward and reverse. What do you all think?

stuck throttle microswitch or solenoid (either of which can't allow current to the starter when you're in the middle of F/R on the selector which is why it stops if you're halway between them) ... First, the throttle microswitch is on the lower firewall (under the seat) directly rearward of your gas pedal - pull one of the two wires and see if the symptom stops, then reconnect it and see if it returns - if so, then You my friend need a new throttle microswitch, about $7. Also, if taking the key out isn't stopping it, you may want to double-check that the switch is actually opening and closing correctly when you turn the key, might be a multi-issue

Try that first and see if it works, we'll start troubleshooting from there if not

here's another thing that may help, it's the wiring diagram - following the electrical "path" is a great way to begin troubleshooting if the simple stuff (throttle micro, keyswitch, solenoid) all come out good ....

I pulled the micro switch completely off and it still runs when i connect the battery. Only shuts off when i'm between forward and reverse. Key is out and ignition wires are off as well.

sounds like a bad starter solenoid

I changed the micro switch and the solenoid and now it works. Thanks for the quick responses guys! I'm new to these things and the knowledge here is awesome!!!
