Default 1990 Marathon Not Charging

I have looked through the forum and seen where you can test the starter/generator and the volt/reg but not sure I understand. I hooked a voltmeter to my battery and the voltage barely climbs when the cart fires up. It stays in the 12v range, never 13v or better. Can someone help me with testing?

The amount of voltage that you will see can be as high as 15 volts at chargeing IF the battery is low but if your battery is well charged the current is controled at 3 to 5 amps.

Should I be able to start it and disconnect the battery and the cart stay running?

I would say not as the battery gives a solid dc current and no fluctuation but don't quot me on that.
I have heard that if the brushes are bad you will have slow starts and prob low or no charging. My 91 is a well used unit and i have rebuilt the entire engine, clutches and such but will this winter add a new limit switch and do a starter/gen rebuild so I know where I am at.
