Default bogging under load???

I am new to carts and have a few questions, when I am alone in the cart it runs fine but with a passenger it bogs bad on takeoff and never does reach top RPM. I also noticed that when I shut it off it sounded like the gas tank was venting out the cap?? I know a kit from Plowmans will get me more bottom end but I have to get things running right before I can convince the wife to let me spend any more money on this thing. Any ideas??
Cart info is 87 G2, fresh rebuilt stock motor, No airbox just a K&N filter on carb, 4" lift, 23" tires.
Any help would be great, I have been a Mechanic (heavy Diesel) for over 20 years but these little guys are foreign to me. Also it might help to know I am 220 pounds, my son is 230, so with the 2 of us in there it is pretty loaded.

Also is there a break in method for the rings on these like the bigger motors??

Did the carb get rejetted with the new air filter?
Does it run any different pulling the choke?

I think it sounds like you are running up against the laws of physics. With 2 "heavyweights" aboard and with 23" tires, you are taxing the power of the engine. I would speak with Plowman's about his lifted performance kit. It'll help a little more with bottom end power.

LOL, I was afraid we were to much for the stock motor to handle, since loosing weight isn't a option really I guess it's time to spend more on the cart.

If the jet is wrong, the motor isn't going to make power. Motor needs to run correctly to make horse power .

Need to read the spark plug.

I'm pretty sure the jet is right, I talked to the guy I bought it from and he has ran it that way for the 4 years he had it, He bought it the way it is so we are not 100% sure but he has run it in the mountains and sand dunes.
I think to be safe I am just going to get the new jet and spring

I'd say look at the clutches, they need to work right or you don't get power to the ground. If the belt is worn to near 1" wide it will bog (new is 1 3/16 wide, yamaha says 1" is limit for stock cart but its worse for lifted carts). If the tension cable under the gen pulley is loose/missing/broken it will bog. If the clutches are dirty and need lube or worn out parts it will not perform like it should. I'd recommend getting that stuff takes care of first before you buy parts other than tune up things. You could get a new belt and the umax spring for it for not much cash and that would help. Get the better HD kevlar belt from CPP, or at least get one 1.25" wide in same length. If the sides in the clutch are worn dished from the belt they need replacing to work right, only the alum sheaves seem to wear out. But cart should still go ok until they wear through. You can clean them and grease the center shafts some G2 don't have a zerk on the secondary newer ones will have one by the ramps. Only put 1-2 pumps in its a bushing and check for grease in center it will slime the belt if it leaks out and you don't clean it off.

My stock engine G9 on 22s would pull two 200lb guys up a steep ditch hill from a dead stop at bottom, only 2mph maybe but it would go up it. I did tune on it some to get it to that point. Now with the clone plus cut sheave/umax spring/HD belt it pulls a wheelie off the top after spinning up that same ditch. Though the umax makes more difference at low to mid speeds where it revs more, the secondary spring does not affect initial takeoff that much. I might try a stock one again as I don't need the rpm with the clone, but my stock one is really old and weak I need to buy one.

You have to figure if you had a 10hp lawnmower and went up a steep hill pulling the same weight you could not go that fast right, so the cart should be close in capability to the mower. The mower may be able to run lower gearing, a cut sheave will help that but only for very low speeds under 5mph.

Look under the gen pulley it goes to the motor mount there. Its about 2.5" long and not much from yamaha, or you can make one with an eye bolt that might rattle more. Otherwise the whole engine can move towards the trans from torque and cause the clutches to shift wrong under high loads when it moves.
