Building a Hitch for 1991 DS
So I couldn't see spending $70 plus for a cheap trailer hitch when I could build it cheaper and stronger. Went to local TSC, bought 2" reciever for $12.99 and built what you see with scraps I had laying around. Total time about 2 hours. I don't plan on pulling a house, but its nice to know it won't break.

Looks strong!! You laid down some good looking welds. I would have to grind off that "Made in China"

nice job on the fab. your welds look great
too bad u didn't add any extra support back into the frame. that rear angle aluminumum is a pretty weak part all by itself. have worked on a lot of carts where that part was all bent up. |

Yeah, I know what you mean. There isn't much that could be done anyways, the bumper does help support some of the weight. I plan on building a steel tube bumper in the future that mounts in the original place as the stock one and tie that into the tounge section of the hitch. Like I said though, I have no plans on pulling a motorhome with the thing.

Re: Building a Hitch for 1991 DS
nice welding , did you beef up around the bolts that run though the plastic bumper ? I pulled the bolts out though the bottom when I to much weight. Went back removed the plastic bumper placed a piece of 1/4" angle all the way across to wear the bumper mounted , then made spacers to fill in the difference on the angle to the hat section and bolted that together. with the angle iron in there I had to cut out the inside of the formed bumper to make fit over the angle then bolted it to the angle iron

Looks nice, nice and beefy. I made mine out of aluminum but needed a drop style.
