1988 G2 early spark timing when cranking
Hi, I am new here. I recently purchased a 1988 yamaha G2 cart not running. I have found wires chewed by mice to the pickup coil, so I replaced it. and another wire broken between battery positive and fuse which I repaired. I now have spark when cranking, a new carb, compression at 170. It only pops out the carb at times and won't start. I purchased and installed a new correct spark plug and resistor plug cap which it did not have. still no luck. tonight I hooked up a timing light and marked the flywheel at tdc. when I cranked the engine it is firing way too early, at about 20-30 degrees. any ideas?

Re: 1988 G2 early spark timing when cranking
It could be the ignitor is bad. The static timing is advanced and the ignitor retards at low rpm starting at 2500 and to I forget 20+ degrees retard or something at idle rpm. Ignitor is on the fuel tank and expensive. You could check the wiring/plug condition they can get corroded inside. It is better to swap this from a good cart to test, due to cost of them.
They also don't like to run correctly without the entire airbox assembly on and sealed well. I would use the newer yamaha plug it is a NGK-BPR2ES, it is hotter and less likely to foul and a Yamaha dealer told me to use it. My G9 would foul out once in a while and did not with this plug. I have a clone in it now, but ran a lot of trails with the stock engine until it started smoking. If you dig around here you should be able to find a copy of the manual for g2/g9 they are almost the same cart, lot of info in there for them. Comp is probably good, the G2 did have higher comp than G9 they kept lowering it for poor fuel. GCs liked to buy substandard fuel for them. If the motor is worn out you usually see ok comp but it burns oil, because the oil ring goes bad first. You can ring them and it sort of works, they really need bored to fix right and that's why a lot of people swap clones into them its cheaper than rebuild (if you buy a shortblock) and more power, and its new. IIRC the G9 started in '90 and detail changes like black bumpers/rockers/steering column/trim/and different seat backs and less compression, not much else changed. |

Thanks for the reply. That’s what I thought about the igniter. I will probably go ahead and order one. Thanks again.

Order an OEM or find an alternative ignitor solution. OEM is $300-400 which IMO is very high. But, the cheap aftermarket ones suck. On my G9 I went through 4 of them before giving up and doing a HEI conversion.

Re: 1988 G2 early spark timing when cranking
Thanks for the replies. Has anyone ever heard of an ignitor causing this type of symptom before? As a test, tonight I removed the flywheel again and moved the ignitor clockwise using just one screw to hold it in place to retard the timing. I checked it with the timing light again and it is just past tdc now and still will not fire. I checked the compression again and it is a little over 180 psi. weird, huh?

A few questions
... Is the new carb OEM or aftermarket? What color is your spark? Have you checked valve lash? Is the airbox installed and sealed tight? Is the plastic spacer cracked between the carb and the head? |

Re: 1988 G2 early spark timing when cranking
I started with an OEM carb, cleaned and set float, then bought an aftermarket.
The spark is blue. Valves are adjusted to .004 inch. I have not replaced or removed the carb spacer, but gave it a good look over while the carb was off and did not see any cracks. |

I have not disassembled the air box yet. Does the throttle cable need to be hooked up and air box need to be sealed for it to even fire and try to start?

These motors are very finicky about the airbox. The lid simply being a little loose will make it run like dookie and bog badly. You've got good spark and compression. I'd hook up the airbox and see what you've got |

Yes, they usually don't outright "stop working", they usually fail with bad timing issues. But, it's usually very late timing, causing fuel to burn in the exhaust system and make loads of heat in the engine bay. |
