The clutch may need to be replaced.. EZGO had a bad batch of drive clutches on some late 2003, early 2004 carts.. They had a late, harsh engagement.. My factory reconditioned 2004 TXT had one, it would give ya a case of whiplash when it engaged.. I took it back to the selling dealer and it was replaced under warranty.. The dealer said EZGO had a service notice on these clutches, and would replace them on carts that had a complaint..

Thanks for the info. I called local dealer and they are checking to see if it is covered. If not is there room to get the clutch off with the motor in the cart?

Yes but you will need a special "puller"

its probably the spring inside the drive clutch, i just went through that with one of my GXT-804's, you would swear its trying to do a wheel stand, they get soft and slam into the belt, instead of gradually moving in to the belt

special puller meens $$$$$$$$$$, after you remove the bolt holding the clutch on get a 1"-20 bolt and a 3/4" round stock 6 1/4" long, put the round stock into the hole and thread the 1'-20 bolt into it untill the clutch pops off

Nice to hear the followups..

Ive got the same problem on a 99 easy go.. Only at the start..will it Jerk into gear....after that its fine..

I did try a shorter belt...and it seems to make the problem worse.. Just a big ole whiplash to start the cart.

I am having this issue also. Ezgo website says the belt should be 1 & 1/8th wide which my belt is as it is fairly new. I have almost a half inch of space the drive clutch needs to close before contacting the belt. However that is not the problem. The problem is the clutch does not start moving until the engine RPM's are quite high. I have been looking at photos online but I cannot seem to see the spring that keeps getting mentioned. Can someone post a link showing the spring or a diagram showing it?
Thanks,

I know it's an old thread but I have same issue on my 01 txt. Waiting on new belt for Wednesday as mine is shiney on the sides hopefully it solves it. It jolts into gear but I have the gap as stated. rpms have to be high before it moves in enough to grab the belt
