Tachometer Install

Hello all.

So I recently bought this tachometer on a whim just to see if it was possible to get it hooked up and of course I was/am curious to how many RPM's I'm turning.

The tach has a selector of choosing between 4, 6 or 8 cylinders. I was thinking this may be a problem and obviously since I'm posting... I hooked the tach up according to the instructions.

Now here is the problem, the tach works but it will only go to about and over a little 2,000 rpm's. Does anyone have an idea of why this is? Is it because the tach isn't compatible with a single cylinder engine or is there something I could be doing wrong?

Yeah I got to thinking about that, about not letting you guys know. It's the 244cc 3pg 2cycle in a 92 marathon

that motor has 2 firing pulses per revolution. You should have cylinders set to 4 on back side select sw.

I had the selection set to the 4 cylinder position and it would only register to around 2,000 rpm at full throttle. I have the governor turned in and I would think it has to be turning more rpm's than that wouldn't it?

does seem like it should be more, i had one of those tach that the needle was bound up because i tighten the mounting bolts to tight, might try loosing mounting bolts some. If you have a remote tach that uses the reflective tape,you could verify the rpm with it. Put the tape on the clutch housing.

Well I'm sure it's not the mounting bolts seeing it's not mounted. I thought I'd first see if I could get it to work before doing all of that.

I don't have any other way of checking what the actual rpm's are unfortunately. I know this engine will turn (from what I've read) 5,000 rpm's and this cart will run 22 mph on the flat so I'm guessing I'm pretty close to that figure.

No biggie really if it doesn't work. I'm out $12 so it was worth the effort to see if it was feasible.

whats the diameter of your rear tires?

I thought about that too but then I remember when I tried the tach I had the rear of the cart jacked up so that wouldn't make any difference, so I guess that wouldn't be it either.

I have a 5" Sunpro tach set to 4 cyl and it reads about 4,500 rpm at full throttle with stock suspension and tires. 1989 Marathon with 3pg.
