Here's what I think... (just my common sense, so take it for what you will!)

The crankcase breather is a type of PCV valve (Positive Crankcase Ventilation)
and it's supposed to redirect oil/fuel vapors from the crankcase back through the carburetor to get burned up through the combustion stage.
Now... with that hose disconnected, you will get "drippings" from it when it's hanging loose,
AND... your carb gets more air to breath with that port open!

This is what I'd like you to try...
Reconnect the breather hose to the carb, THEN... release the clamps on your air filter box and prop the lid open with something,
Then take it for a ride to see if the performance improves,
IF... it does improve, it could be the the duct that I mentioned previously is plugged! (I've heard of that before)
If the performance doesn't improve, THEN... we'll go on to other troubleshooting!

Big Mule? I've got a feeling you were on the right track!

I'm all in .

It's kind of funny... I'm reflecting back to someone that had a similar problem,
Come to find out?... Critters were storing acorns in the front opening of that duct!

It was nothing a metal coat hanger, and a shop vac couldn't fix!

I bit of a rain this morning so just went out with the airbox open and after it warms up the same thing happens. Starts to stall, today it did a bit of a backfire with a large puff of oil smoke out the back. Pulled the plug and it seems to be a bit oil fouled, looks to be more oil than fuel. But what do you guys think? and that's a fairly new plug, plus the inside of the intake is covered in oil.

With this does it after it heats up a bit would the coil come into play?

I am use to keeping the intake open because my other carry all has a different intake right at the choke button and mud daubers always block the openings.

Just wondering what you ever found out with this? I'm having similar issues. Mine floods out right away.
