Re: brake ajustment
Im just saying that the self adjusters just keep the brake shoe adjustment close, if the adjusters are not seized up...He said the drums were off already so the best way is to adjsut the brake shoes is to manually turn the adjuster(also known as the star wheel) because it looks like a star and the self adjuster turns the "points of the star". The cables do stretch over time, its inevitable, so the J hook nut is used for that, but its also used as a "cheat" to get the shoes close to the drum surface again.
Again, its only a golf cart so whatever works for ya will be fine...just that adjusting the cable slack only for a low pedal is just hiding the fact the shoes are really in need of a more precise adjustment than the self adjusters will allow, assuming they are working. --> on my cart I adjust the shoes in the drums, and then the cables. O n the carts for sale we just tighten the cables |

Re: brake ajustment
Glad you've got it taken care of coolbob!
A little insight... (for any future readers) Pre 96 were manual adjusting brakes, hense, the adjusting pawl on the top of the backing plate! 96 and after, are self adjusting brakes... Initially... if you want to adjust the brake shoes, (not the pedal travel) Drive it in reverse, and hit the brake hard 2 or 3 times... after doing that, the shoes should be adjusted "relatively" close and equally! (they're supposed to check and adjust themselves, every time you back up!) if not... remove the drums, and do what Ox said! |
