This is from an 86 but I think they are the same. The first image is the engine on its end with the (broken starter bracket removed). The following images are the starter held in with the broken bracket. I found some pieces originally for a Harley cart and made those work. If you just imagine the new shiny bits being about the same shape but welded to the rest of the bracket then you get the picture so to speak. The last image shows the engine back in the cart and wired up.
I hope this helps.
Dave

My 88 1/2 (should be same as your 88 was from the factory) bracket is a bit different. I'll see if I can get a good pic for you in the daylight tomorrow.

You're welcome for the help...

The reason I call mine an 88 1/2 is because it's got a 1989 date in the MFG code (ends in 89), but the motor is a 2PG motor..and they started using the 3PG motor mid way through 89.

Didn't think to ask if you know the difference between 2PG and 3PG motors...

One way to tell the difference is that the 2PG muffler stands vertical..the 3PG is horizontal.

But yours being an 88 means it was built with a 2PG motor...the 3PG was not introduced till mid 89
