Re: 2002 DS V-Glide/Resistor problems
I might be WAY off base here....so I'm just going to mention it and then shutup.
In participating in a forum (to build a controller at 72-144v 650-750 amps), it was my understanding from the conversations that a pre-charge resistor was to allow some voltage to pre-charge the controller circuitry to reduce the inrush from the solenoid slapping on; thus lengthening the life of the capacitors and mofsets of the controller that has to manage all that amperage. As such, it would be a fairly critical component unless you want to burn up the controller at some point. I might have misunderstood all of that completely, but it sure made sense to my (slightly inebriated...) brain at the time.... I'll shutup now...! Wherewolf |

Re: 2002 DS V-Glide/Resistor problems
I find that when some information is written the terms controller, contactor, and solenoid seem to interchange some what? I will quote from Alltrax tec note 010
"The resistor, typically seen across the big terminals on the contactor, pre-charging the filter capacitors in the controller. This minimizes the voltage across the contactor to reduce arcing on the contacts as they close" I personaly think this is being written about the solenoid, and means the extension of life of the solenoid rather than the "controller" not being an electrical engineer I'm taking the term at face value? When contacting Alltrax ( from my old home state ) the use of pre-charge resistor never came up about any help on controller life or operation? How about some electrical engineer helping out here with clarification for us all? |

Re: 2002 DS V-Glide/Resistor problems
looks like I will be replacing v glide today. 3rd and 4th brush blocks from top appear to be getting really hot. Looks like they were torqued and over ran the plastic dividers. Solid state is looking more and more appealing...

Re: 2002 DS V-Glide/Resistor problems
you can buy just the blocks in fact you can buy all the internal parts instead of the whole unit.......unless thats what you want...........................

Re: 2002 DS V-Glide/Resistor problems
well I kind of broke some of the lug dividers on the front side as well while upgrading the cables. So I need to at least replace housing and blocks.

Re: 2002 DS V-Glide/Resistor problems
Ended up getting used housing with blocks in fantastic shape and a new brush for the wiper arm and the microswitch for $40bones. Lot cheaper than the alternative...
