295cc Engine Putting Out Smoke
I just purchased a 2005 TXT with the 295cc engine. The oil looks clean and right on the full mark. When I got it home I let my wife ride it around the yard. When I went to park it I took it out of gear and ran it for about 1 minute. My wife noticed visible smoke rising from above the right rear wheel well. It was a white/greyish smoke, definitely exhaust and very smelly. The next day I put 4 gallons of fresh gas in it with some Seafoam and took it out and ran it around the neighborhood for 20 minutes. I occasionally noticed the smelly exhaust fumes. When I got home I checked it again and still smoking. It starts easy and runs smoothly.
I know it is difficult to diagnose from my brief description but any suggestions and what it might be or what to check would be appreciated. Rick |

Re: 295cc Engine Putting Out Smoke
Hi Rick, welcome to BGW...
I love to old 295 robin motors.. they run and run. I haven't had one in my cart(s) for a while, but first off, these engines are no different than others, they develop wear issues, and frequently smoke a little. My last one had a bad cylinder, and I was the reason, I had a bad placement of an oil ring on rebuild, and I had to use an old oil ring, so after a few weeks it developed a little smoking habit, which was a disappointment, since i had just rebuilt it. Regardless, I recently gave that cart to my neighbor, and that engine sat in my garage for a year and it started right up, and it is running quite well presently. The one issue is that about every two weeks, the plugs have to be cleaned, and swapped out... the good cylinder, for the bad cylinder. So, as for your motor, there really isn't a blockage or a gasket or something simple usually when one smokes, it is usually that the engine has run and the rings and cylinders develop a little bit of *blowby* and the crankcase pressure pushes back around the cylinders and sneaks out the exhaust... hence it being funny colored and smelly. When you are running with throttle up, that blow by is sucked out the exhaust. when you sit idling, that back pressure builds up and if it is sitting still, the smoke can get kind of weird. I think you could probably run one of these robin engines with just one or two intact rings on the cylinders...lOL,,, they are hardy ! I don't know of any tricks that you can do... I know when my Deville has been driven by my wife for a while, I have to take it out and do a a couple of WOT's to loosen the carbon off the top of the cylinder walls, but I don't think it helps with these engines.. My advise is run it. Use 30w it won't burn as easy, and it still is fluid enough for oil lube. Later, if you're feeling froggy or you absolutely have to have a smoke free motor, you can think about swapping it. Unless you abuse it though, I doubt it will stop running for a while. sry for the long post, again, welcome. |

Question - Does putting the shift handle straight up take it out of gear and allow you to run it out of gear or is this not advised? |

Re: 295cc Engine Putting Out Smoke
Tough question and I was trying to determine that myself. As we were first driving it around the yard my wife said, "I smell gas" but she is no mechanic and could have meant that she smelled exhaust.
I always thought white smoke was oil and black was fuel. This smoke looked more like a grey and I couldn't tell if it was white or black. It did not have a raw gas smell but it was pretty foul. |

Whats the plug look like? How does it run? Have you checked the compression? |

Re: 295cc Engine Putting Out Smoke
It had about a gallon or two of gas in it when I got it. The gas smelled ok and the fuel filter looked new and gas was clear. I added 4 gals. of fresh gas with some Seafoam in it and ran it 20 mins. and is still the same. It starts and runs good, just smokes and smells. I just got it home and have not checked the compression.

Re: 295cc Engine Putting Out Smoke
Rickochet, is the cart lifted? The reason I ask, the full mark on the dip stick may be off if it's a lifted cart. If this is the case drain the oil and re-fill with 1.4 litre, about 1-1/2 quarts of oil. If you dont want to measure in the future, make sure it's on level ground and scribe a new full mark on the dip stick. (I measure my oil each time).
If it's not lifted, you may want to check your valves. Adjusting the valves on these engines is pretty easy. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ezgo-...djustment.html I cant imagine the motor is too tired being an 04. Good luck, and let us know what works |

Re: 295cc Engine Putting Out Smoke
Hey, Rick...don't tell me your last name is O'shay.. lol
When the handle is straight up , it is technically in neutral, and you can run it however..so sure, you can pop it in the neutral position and run it to your hearts content. you probably won't be able to *rev* it, if the pedal brake is actuated, unless you lift the seat and *manually* rev it... I would advise being careful about the *neutral* position.. it has a safety lockout on the transmission, it is a little difficult to see, but it is a little 1'' by 1/2'' metal swing plate that has a bent down portion ...and you swing it and it pops down and hold the transmission from falling into gear ... Generally, to accomplish all that, I just make sure it is in neutral..and make sure no one,or myself, *bumps* the shifter, while I am revving or running the motor. You can check the plugs for fouling, *which is just another indicator of blowby* , if it is present..of course, you can't determine exactly a lot of this, until one actually rebuilds the engine. If you are mechanically inclined you can do a few of the other suggestions..as in adjust valves, etc.. sometimes that can help. When you sit still idling with these motors..an unusual place for them, since they were designed for stop and go , stop and go, and not for idling, they have a very high backpressure muffler setup which in my opinion , just adds to the situation. IF you really want to investigate, and do something about it...start with the simplest first, pull the plugs, maybe change them..and the oil, as long use oil burns faster than fresh.. Quote:
