Default Yamaha G1 2 stroke, won't run with air filter on.

Ok, I'm sure I'll figure this out, but in the meantime, I figure I'll post it and see if any of you guys have eve had this happen. Cart will not run with any type of filter on the carb. I tried the factory one, even took it off and sucked through it to see if it was clogged, and it's as free flowing as they come. Next, I took a brand new motorcycle air filter, and rigged it on the carb, still, no bueno! With no filter on, it runs like a champ, but it runs best with the mixture screw about 1/2 turn out. New fuel filter, all lines good, carb has been cleaned. Any ideas? I did notice that the float needle does not have a clip that holds it on to the float. Not sure if this is normal for these carts or not. BTW, I just got this cart a couple days ago, and it's been sitting for a few years at least. Compression is 135! Thanks

You must have a clog in your carburetor somewhere. As tew45 says above, I would start with the main jet and be sure it's absolutely clear. However, I would also check the pilot jet to be sure it's not clogged either. As you clean the jets, be gentle with them as you don't want to enlarge the holes.

Check for a crack in the rubber carb flange.
