I'm estimating that I have about one year of life left in these 12 volt batteries, thanks to this forum, i've stretched them out 5 years already. They still perform fairly well but they are slowly dropping and using up lots more water than before. If this fix works it will buy me some time until I can afford new ones.

agree about the air flow and I'd add maybe have the caps off just in case you drill through and there would be pressure or significant H2 release. - but covered with a paper towel or plastic or something so not to get lead filings in a cell and short a plate,
