Issues with differential gears
I have a 2000 JD gator project that has EZGO txt drive components. I opened up the differential and pulled axle shafts to install a limited slip kit. I found only about an ounce of old funky oil, and a few chunks of the drive gear. I removed the damaged drive gear and have started searching for a replacement. Hoping to find something used rather than the roughly $500 new.
After the drive gear was out, I inspected the intermediate gear. I didn't see any gear damage, but noticed a fair amount of side to side play (~1/8" lightly by hand). The intermediate shaft bearings seem loose in the housing. This doesn't seem right. I was wondering if excessive side play contributed to the drive gear damage. Maybe, rather than fully engaging, the gears were only overlapping by 1/2-1/3? The drive gear damage was to one side. I'll remove the freeze plugs and pull the intermediate shaft out of the case to examine it more closely. Any guidance on assessing the intermediate shaft, case, or sourcing a gear set? |
