Default get 1996 - 36 volt cart to 25 mph?

I've got a chance to buy a 1996 EZGO for around $700. Needs batteries.

What would it take to get that cart to around 25 mph?

thanks

Convert to 48 volts and get the Plum Quick Bandit upgrade. Converting to 48 volts will likely require a different controller, solenoid, battery charger and possibly new cables.

I bought my 36v 93 yamaha for $750.... a conversion to 48v got me from 13mph to 20 then I replaced the controller, solenoid and batteries with DIY lithium 72 pack which got me to 27mph Still have the original stock 36v motor which works great but I bought a High torque motor to eventually swap in to use with larger tires and more aggressive terrain

Anyway the cost to go from 36v to 72v if I were to skip the 48v conversion involved a $175 curtis clone 400 (475) amp controller. a $40. 400amp solenoid about $100 in diy 2awg cables and the batteries. In my case I made 2 60ah 72v nmc lithium packs out of used EV packs for about $900 + $100 for the 20a charger.

The cost to go to 48v is a bit cheaper. the 500a series controllers are only about $130shipped and the batteries tend to be cheaper to make with less cells needed.
You could build a 112ah (likely something more like 90ah since the cells are used) pack with these for about $650-700 depending on what you decide to use to compress the cells and mand the case.

The 36v motors work fine on 48v... mine works great on 72v though I dont know how much abuse it would take at twice the voltage..

You could also go nuts and build a nice tricked out cart for more $$ sky is the limit.
Heres a link to my budget build. https://buggiesgonewild.com/showthread.php?t=188992

I have a 95 Medalist the I installed an Alltrax XCT48400 controller, heavy duty solenoid, 2 gauge cables and taller tires. Still running 36 volts. It will run between 24-25 mph no problem. It also takes hills with no issues.

Stock motor? if so thats pretty impressive if your getting that. I would imagine you have at least 23" tires which can help with top speed

The controller doesnt normally have any effect on top speed unless the stock controller had a speed limit programmed into it limiting it.

I went from the stock yamaha controller to an alltrax right before I got my 48v battery built and it made no noticeable difference in performance on the street except I could make it accel quicker.

With that controller, it seems like you must have also changed the motor? Normally the speed of a given series motor is limited/controlled by the voltage.

Still a good speed

It is a stock motor. The original controller was 250 amps max, the Alltrax in 400. And if a I remember the tires are 23". I used my GPS to check the speed. The cart takes the hills in my reosrt on gravel with no trouble at all.

It took 41 amps at even 48v to go 20 mph at wot with my 500 amp controller... for top speed the peak amps has nothing to do with much of anything. It does come in handy for pulling weight or climbing terrain

My cart does 27mph now with 72v and draws 71amps to do so. same stock 36v motor (with 20" tires) I have a real time amp meter on my dash as well as many practice testing using the software connected to my controllers.

For the record I have used a stock controller, an alltrax 225, alltrax sr72500 (set to 575amps max), a 500amp curtis clone (set to 575amp and 275a continuous and now a 400 amp 72 curtis clone programmed to 475a max and all used on the same 93 yamaha series cart.
The motor onlys draws what it can use and on flat ground. And it as well as the rear end gearing(which is effected by tire size) is what matters for speed.

Please dont be misled into thinking a higher amp capably controller will automatically make your cart go faster. (I could find you quotes where even the folks here who sell them will tell you the same).

Hopefully someone else with knowledge will chime in too but again thats only the case if your current controller has the max speed limited by the settings. (like a golf course cart programmed to only go 10mph max) For more speed you either need to increase the voltage, or replace the tires or motor and both of those options often come at a cost as less power for hauling passengers and climbing

I tried multiple controller and 3 different voltages in my cart (36, 48 and now 72v ) and I found typically at 36v a stock series cart does between 12-15mph. larger wheels gets you anywhere from 3-5mph more but at a loss in torque (power) and if you want more speed you either need a speed motor or more voltage.

New batteries will make a far bigger difference than any 36v controller for speed.
