Looking for a schematic
Just picked up a '79 D4 last night.
Previous owner was trying to get it going and has installed a new Tillotson carb as well as a couple other new parts. He played around with the adjustment screws so Im not sure where they are adjusted to at this point. I hit the carb with some starting fluid (prior to reading just how bad an idea that was) and it did fire up. When it fired, it sounded real good. Prior owner stated it checked out good with a compression tester. So now I am pretty sure I am dealing with a fuel issue. In reading this site, I see that bad crank seals can be a problem in regards to the motors ability to draw fuel. I am not a mechanic, but Im not a complete idiot either. If I need to replace seals I am willing to try it myself. Has anyone got, or know where I can find on line, a schematic of the motor so I know what Im getting into? Thanks. |

welcome Lumpy,
Before you tackle the seals, I would look toward the carb area first. 1st- reomve the fuel line from the carb and crank the motor over, If it does pump fuel, reinstall it and crank it while spraying a "quick" shot of starting fluid around the base of the carb, (mounting area). If it fires you have an air leak in the mounting area. If it still doesn't I would pull the carb and do a total teardown and clean, check for a stuck needle, trash in high/low speed ports, bad needle diaphram. I always suggest getting the gallon can of "gunk" brand carb cleaner from your local parts store, even comes with a little basket in it. Total teardown, remove all rubber and gaskets and give couple hour soak, rinse all the parts with water and then blow out. Water first because you don't want to atomize and breath the carb cleaner or blow it on anything with nice paint. reassemble and set low/high speed screws at 1 1/2 turns out, that should get you running enough to do the final carb adjustments. For first startup you might need to put your hand or a rag over the carb to choke it. |

Thanks for the input guys.
I haven't had time to really get into this thing yet but in looking at it, it looks like one of the carb adjustment screws "might" be missing. This is supposedly a brand new carb. The prior owner told me he was adjusting the screws and did have the cart running and driving around the yard at one point. The screw might have been loosened to far and fell out I guess. I am going to pull the carb off so I can get a good look at it and go from there. It is pretty hard to get motivated about working on this when the garage is in the 20s temp wise. Well, the starter is right over top of the carb so I am going to have to remove that before I can get a good look at it. My other problem is that the lighting in the garage is horrid. Thats why I say it might be missing.
This is a pretty busy weekend for me so I dont know if I will get time to monkey with it for a few days. As soon as I can get at it I will update things here. I really want to get it running so I can start on getting it cleaned up, its not to nice at this point. |
