Default Installed new batteries

Okay, last night I installed new batteries in my cart. Now the lights come on, and the radio comes on, but the motor will not run and the reverse buzzer doesnt even sound.
I installed positive to negative in series. What gives?

It is a 48vlt cart. I got Energizer Batteries from Sams and they are 8vlt Batteries. The charger came on and cycled over night. Would it still do that even if I have a connection wrong?
