OK, so when I got home I went straight to the cart and looked at the leads. Turns out, I'm an idiot. The terminal that looked like the obvious one at the end of the series was actually incorrect. I took a reading on the correct terminals, 52v. Thanks for the help everybody. Next time I will spend a bit more time looking at things before I panic.
