Default club car uncommon key??

is this worth buying or is there a better way to secure my cart while I have it parked in public?

Yes. It helps until you lose the key.

An easy thing is to keep the common key switch but run one side of it through a hidden toggle (or latching push-button) switch. You turn the key on and also flick the hidden switch on and everything works as normal. If anyone else tries to run the cart with another (common) key nothing happens because they don't know about the hidden switch. Conversely if someone finds the hidden switch but doesn't also have the key turned on, nothing happens.

It wouldn't stop a determined thief (very little does) but it would certainly deter a joyrider or opportunistic thief who doesn't want to hang around.

Just don't forget to set the switch when you turn off and remove the key. Try to have the hidden switch in a place where it is easily set so that a thief doesn't see you obviously setting it as you leave.

A more secure method is to wire in a number pad into which you have to enter a code before the key switch gets power (or you can by-pass the key switch altogether). Either way you don't have an uncommon key to lose. Even so nothing will stop the determined thief who has time to remove the front panel and rewire anything you have done.

Yes. If someone finds the hidden switch and does not turn the key, it will not go.

One way to hide the switch is to put it on the front panel labelled "Radio" or "Lights" or something else. Other people won't know that the "Radio" switch has to be on as well as the common key switch.

This is called "hidden in plain sight".

It shouldn't matter which one. Just take a wire from one side of the key switch and connect it to one side of the toggle switch then add an additional wire from the other side of the toggle back to the key switch. The toggle that you want is a single pole single throw (SPST) that can handle 48V DC. There's not a huge amperage going to the key switch so any robust toggle that can handle 48V DC should do. The additional wire should be at least the same gauge as the wires to the key switch.

When you do that it means that the toggle switch has to be on for the key switch to get its normal power, therefore both need to be on for the cart to work. If either switch is in the off position the cart won't work.

When you are choosing a toggle, normally a toggle switch that can handle 125V AC can handle 48V DC but check with the supplier.

Don't just grab a 12V switch.

You can also use a $5 48v relay with either a hidden momentary push-button or a behind-the-dash magnetic activated reed-switch and have a self-arming kill switch (it re-arms when the key switch is turned OFF).
