97 Club Car wiring Question-What is?
I'm ok with most all electrical but this has me stumped! Working on 96 club car DS 48 volt by 6...8s and installing add'l 12 volt lights and seems on this particular cart the fuse block just ran to 16 volts (two batteries) which is bad. Was told this cart may have come with a converter? Maybe there is one?...there is a strange long potted ballast looking device on frame rail. Was told it was a converter....but how could it possibly work.
Photos attached, shows 125 watts, 28 amps, caution hot. The darn thing hooks on one side (black wire) to B- on controller; other side (black wire) goes to a ground block looks like. How could this work? my lights go to a fuse block that is powered by a RED wire which they had attached directly to batteries? Puzzled, any thoughts from you electrical gurus? |

It looks like a 16v to 12v voltage reducer. Could be it quit working and they are running lights on 16v straight off pack.

Re: 97 Club Car wiring Question-What is?
Boy, good logic...yes instead of a converter I bet they just used a resistance bank in series to drop the voltage from 16to 12! Ijust checked and I see the one side does go to B- so understand that....but other side goes to a ground block with places to plug a "ground" on it. So checked from + 16 volts (2 batts) to ground and it's 16 volts....BUT from +16 to the ground block (which runs now through the long ballast....voltage is down to 12!
So you headed me in the right direction. Thanks. What they did then evidently is not opt for an expesnive converter, but put a resistor in line with all 12 volt stuff, connected positive to 16 volts but ran the ground through the resistor. Sort of strange, but since they control ground for speed guess it's their approach. Great help getting me in the right direction... |

Install a 48-12 volt reducer and do away with all the other stuff.
