Yamaha G9? Inside a Taylor Dunn 6-80 Shell Engine Stalls out With Half throttle
Hello All,
I am trying to get a Taylor-Dunn R-680 from the early 90's running right again. It has an Engine Stamped Yamaha JG5- 026220. It has been sitting for about 10 years. Anyway here is where I am at with it: I bought a new Carb (matches G9), pumped out old gas, then I replaced the fuel filter (that a was a pain since it is tank internal - why did they do that?), I then bought a new NGK spark plug, oil change, air filter change, new air box tie-downs and lid, and put in fresh premium (just a gallon or so). It will start now, and it does drive (maybe 6 MPH), but as I put my foot down on the Pedal past about half way, the engine cuts out on me and misses completely. I have checked that the airbox is sealed (even put silicone caulk around the edges to be sure), it does seem to respond (intermittently) to a moderate amount of choke pulled out when driving it. I have felt it's power come on for like a second or two, so i know it is there. I took the lid off the primary clutch and no weights appeared broken, I clean out some old black grease that had pool in the lid and lightly brushed on some new grease lightly. I replaced the main drive belt. At this point - I figured it was a fuel pump or vacuum issue, so I replaced the fuel pump, and no change. I then replaced the carb gasket and the plastic collar thing-mount (spacer). No difference. The gov. bolt is somewhere between half way and three quarters undone, when I tried tightened it a bit, I just got backfiring. My plan now is to buy a 12v Electric Low PSI fuel pump, I figure if there is a hidden vac. leak, this will not matter with an electric pump. I've also heard this could be an Electric (no Spark at high RPM issue) possibly an igniter or coil or speed limiter? issue. If that doesn't work, perhaps I'll try the rerouting of the gov. cable directly to choke to bypass and try that. Anyway guys I am tired of guessing around with it, anyone have a suggestion other then to put it in neutral near a cliff? I'd appreciate it. |

Did you buy a cheap knock off carburetor? The Chinese ones do not work well, if at all. OEM should be “Mikuni,” not “Mokini” or any similar name.

I have a Mikuni motor on a thumper. The spacer between the carb and the manifold had a hairline crack and ran just like you are saying. Using the choke helped with the fuel mixture. Check the spacer

Re: Yamaha G9? Inside a Taylor Dunn 6-80 Shell Engine Stalls out With Half throttle
Hi guys,
Really appreciate the help. Yes, I did put an aftermarket carb MOKUNI on it. I took apart the original carb that I took off and cleaned it completely. I then put the original Mukuni Carb back on, and the cart is running much better (I pulled the spark plug and it was wet with black gas/oily coating from the aftermarket carb... I am still considering bypassing the governor but can't make up my mind up, and was hoping to just tighten the 10 mm bolt down (It is now around half way/middle of the bolt). I am getting acceleration now with the pedal all the way down, but it still feels like it is missing at the top end of the acceleration. Oddly with the original carb back on, I am now noticing that it sometimes doesn't want to close entirely (I think i will add an extra closing spring). Also, at full throttle, the carb opens to only about 85% but not fully open. I am struggling with adjusting the throttle cable by the pedal, if I make it tighter to open all the way, it doesn't want to close (I am not getting full range of carb movement). Anyway, let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I am looking at getting it to solid 18-20 MPH, but not more than this. Really appreciate the suggestions. |

Sounds to me like you're having conflicts with cable lengths not allowing full range of operation.
My G9 is conservatively adjusted at the governor and will run 18mph all day long, otherwise completely stock on 20" tires. If you bypass the governor, make sure you get a tach or the engine is a good as done. |
