Default EZ GO starter Ques.

I was brought an EZ GO 2 stroke today for a no start. My question is how many volts is the starter supposed to draw? I have a fully charged battery and jumper cables running from my Jeep to the cart and it draws about 8 volts and doesn't turn over. Now it will start when it's cold but as soon as it warms up it dies and won't turn over again till it cools down. Will the starter from a club car work on it?

It will draw the full 12 volts, it's the amps drawn under load you need to measure.
you sure it's the starter?

Yes the motor is free. I can spin it by hand easily. The starter/ generator gets really hot to the touch while trying to start it even while cold. On my Yammi it doesn't get that hot even while running. I'm fairly new to the EZ GO thing so bare with me. There is no vin plate so I don't know what year it is. Also I beleive the body is a custom made diamond plate body.

How many amps is it supposed to draw? I'm not sure it's the starter that's why I'm asking. The starter turns over fine w/ out a load on it .

The starter gen gets warm but not hot. There is possibility that there is "drag" inside the motor (dirt, sludge). Also a "not-so-tight" (loose) connection of the cables running to the solenoid from the starter (F2) or even the A1 (to ground) may cause this "hot" starter you mentioned.

Without load, even a battery with less than 12 volt reading can make the starter turn. But to crank the engine, the battery must dish out over 12 volts for the starter to overcome the load and turn/rotate.

Found something else out today. When it's running it actually drains the battery instead of charging it. The guy bought the starter off the internet and the seller won't return his calls or honor his warranty. I'm leaning toward the starter/ generator being bad. Now my next question is will a club car starter/ generator work on this app.?

First thing first. Your battery is drainng because of faulty voltage regulator and/or faulty starter. If the VR is adjustable, make the adjustment. The starter needs cleaning and a set of new carbon brush.

Your next question about clubcar starters. Starters run on dc. I don't see why you cannot use a clubcar starter although I have no previous experience on that. You may have to reverse the polarity if the rotation is counter clockwise. Also the the starter end cover may not match with your installation set up.

I think I have figured it out thanks to this site. The starter from a club car will work on the ez go. I replaced the battery w/ a known good battery from my Yami and she starts right up every time. The VR is brand new and so was the starter but there is an internal short I beleive. The club car starter only draws 2 volts under a load versus the original starter drawing 6-8 volts. The owner of the cart needs to get ahold of the guy he bought the starter from and see if they'll warranty it now.
