Safe RPMs
I received one of the small hour meter/tachs off Ebay. I have an 05 stock gas txt. Right now with govener tweeking & 2 people onboard, I am at 19 mph(gps) @ 3980ish rpms...
This is fast enough, but am I safe on my rpms ? thanks for your inputs. |

Re: Safe RPMs
This will be no problem for a healthy engine.
Onley make some difference in revs, not continuisly the toprevs. Save revs? Just look at mine..... Benno |

Re: Safe RPMs
You have some nice specs there.... In my "STOCK" engine, I have lots of room left for govener adjustment ( I am about 1/2 way out now)... My problem is I have no idea where high rpms start hurting the engine. I have read a few different max's in some threads.. 4000, 4300, & 5000 max rpms..
I guess since it am fast enough for us, and the rpms now are safe- I dont need anymore adjustments, but more SAFE speed is always good. |

Re: Safe RPMs
Hello,
For a basic engine every single extra rev. is less hours. The best oil (Synthetic) does help to gain some hours. (Extra heat is the problem) Extra bearings in the rods will give you more hours. If you do the two things above, you will have more hours as original. (On a healthy engine) Above 5000 revs, you will need this anyway! The other point is: will you drive and turn around when your cart is going to tip over becaus of the higher speed. (Although i do not know the drivingqualities of a golfcart) Even my racecart tips over as i wish!!!! And do not forget the brakes...... Benno |

Re: Safe RPMs
I looked at the pics in your go-cart folder. Pretty cool..A bit more advanced than a stock golf cart engine... LOL !!!
So my stock engine is designed for a safe 5000 rpm MAX ? Quote:

Re: Safe RPMs
There is a rev limiter built in to the ignitor, it limits max RPM to 42-4300RPM.. The engine will "surge" when you hit the limiter.. As long as you keep the max RPM's at 4000 or less you'll be OK..
I had the stock (295) engine in my 2004 maxed out at 4100.. With 22" tires and 8:1 hi-speed gears, it would hit 25-26 MPH with the pedal on the floor.. |

Re: Safe RPMs
That's nothing!!! After dropping in a lightly modded 23HP Vanguard V-twin, it'll hit 40MPH in the blink of an eye!!

Re: Safe RPMs
Hello Billfo,
No, it isn't! If you would do nothing at the engine, except taking away the limiter, till about 5000 revs it will more or less take the äbuse. But it will significant shorten the enginelive! So you have to change the rods before they brake or go stuck on the cranck! With bearings and synthetick oil it will go. Significant more than 5000, say more than 5.5 / 6 also need extra things like a different oilsystem, valvesprings etc...... My own experience is also: often more than 8500 will give broken rods! My last two times were 55 hours and 64 hours. My old aircooled did more than 300 hour with revs up to 8200. Benno |
