Wayne, could you have a small header gasket leak? Only shows up when under heavy load.

Mike I not sure about the gasket leak I'll check that. The pop or little back fire only came after we had the car in the pits, not on a hard run pulling the car back..

Make sure your carb butterfly closes completely......May be a little sticky at times, like when going slow.

I set mine to idle never had that problem. It works that way for some but when the butterfly closes all the way you get no airflow and a carb works on airflow. I set it like a G1, very slow idle just faster than the starter (have to hold the pedal just on, if throttle moves you need to adjust cable so there is a little free play before throttle opens so it can run at idle). Then set idle mix usually around 1.5 turn out is little rich and works fine. If it backfires coasting down slower its normally lean idle. Always worked for me anyway.

Have to let it idle for a while to get mix fine tuned, sometimes too rich it will quit after a minute try turning it in a hair. Then it starts a lot better for me too.

I was wondering if I was running a little rich?? I have richened it up when I put the Plowman kit on my cart, and I use a K & N filter without a air box. The hard work it does when towing my 1650 lbs. race car would not make a difference??

Wayne

Thanks to my friends for the advice.....

Then I think I'm jumping on the other side with Flint and Sho. If it happening on deceleration.

Where is the throttle when it pops? Idle jet is only to maybe 1/8 throttle at most, the rest is the main jet. That you have to run it hard and read the plug to check, the idle you can set at idle. Usually idle pops are most common. Also make sure the throttle is not open when it starts running (hits the starter switch under the pedal).

Usually too rich will miss, usually under less load and smooth out with more load. These will run best a little rich if you are working them hard. Will show a dark plug. If you can see the exhaust sometimes you can gas it on/off and it will make a slight black smoke when rich.

I'mn not sure about the throttle, I'm in the racer, I'll ask my crew chief (wife) when she gets home tonight. I am thinking that she may be on and off the throttle as she turn into the pit box, would that cause the little back fire or pop that I hear?? I have never noticed it when I am driving the cart... When it poped I did not notice any smoke...
