Default HEI ignition control module problems

new here. tried the GM HEI that i found on this website and also used the wiring diagram to a T. it lasted about a mile down the road and died. i checked everything again and it just led me to the ignition control module, so i replaced it again. mile down the road died again. found the oem on the web, wired back to original and it didnt even make it out the driveway. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

It cannot be over stressed how very important it is to get rid of the heat generated by the unit. Did you grind the frame to bare metal before you mounted the HEI unit? You should also have used a dielectric grease to further dissipate the heat.
Although it is a long shot I would also check the output of the generator if your regulator is not regulating you may be running at 18 volts which will surely causes issues.

dave's right, and like to add that most of those heis also have small plastic locating nub on the back that has to be removed to get good contact.

In a word, no. However this all sounds rather surreal, many people have performed this modification and no one has had this failure rate. Are you sure that it is electrical issue? Have you pulled the plug and determined that it is not sparking.

The main purpose is that if your ignitor dies EZGO want about $140 for a replacement. However some unsung genius discovered that a HEI module from a 76 Chevy would do the job for about $40. Now some also claim that the HEI unit gives a bigger and better spark when coupled with a high output coil but the main reason is the reduced cost of the repair.

Ah, So if you don't need it. Don't do it.

Thank you

Mark, That is my opinion although others may disagree. When I restored my 86 by some strange quirk of fate the ignition side worked and I left well alone. The engine starts first time and I can get 20+mph. If the ignitor ever dies I will perform the HEI mod and use a new coil but I don't expect to see any increase in performance.
