A "constant power" wire, usually Yellow, that provides 100% of the Radio's power requirement. A "switched power" wire, usually Red, that provides a trigger signal (low current) so the Radio knows when to turn ON. The standard has been in effect for decades (why I said radios manufactured this century) that minimizes current consumption on the ignition start system (switch or button). While there may be some Radios out there that do not follow the standard, most do, but when in doubt one can always place an ammeter in series with each of the wires to determine where the current is coming from. Most marine radios and some newer models have non-volatile memory so no current is needed when the radio is OFF. |
