Default High speed gears?

Hey everyone,

Ive got a quick question regarding high speed gears.

Well i started working on one of my 98cc's wich had an issue in the tranny when you select reverse, it would just grind. So today i had some free time, and decided to dig into this bad boy tranny. So anyways i found the problem. A bad input shaft bearing on the driver side caused a plasic thrust plate bushing to break, and the reverse select gear shifed out a bit.. No biggie, i got the parts on order.

So now, my plans for this cart was for it to be strictly a on road cart, and now that i got the tranny open, i plan on doin some hs gears in it. I can get 8:1 from one of my suppliers, and i can also get 6:1 from another. Which one should i go with?

Personaly im leaning towards the 8:1 because i might be putting a rear seat kit on this one, and would still like some power to spare. Also i will probably be machining the clutch down, and if you all agree, putting some torque springs in it.

What do ya all think

Thanks

I'm not sure but, isn't 8:1 for speed and 6:1 gives more torque and less speed? If my thinking is right and you may haul passengers, you may want to go 6:1 for decent speed and more torque. Scott

I believe the stock gear ratio is around 12:1. so a 8:1 would be fast (around 25-27 mph). and a 6:1 would be even faster(33+mph).

All of which would decrease your torque.

In that case I would go 8:1 and have the best of both worlds. Scott
